Recently, there have been multiple email fraud attempts, known as "phishing,” that were initiated via email sent to both the general public and to some credit union members that appeared to be from the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Did you know that a $1,000 credit card debt with a 19.8 percent annual percentage rate (APR) would take you about five years to pay off, if you only made a minimum payment of $26? And, at the end of the five years, you would have paid approximately $583 in interest.

While the average APR credit cards is about 14 percent, ranging from a low of 5.25 percent to over 20 percent, consumers with less than perfect credit or limited credit history will pay a higher APR. The Credit Union National Association (CUNA) has just advised that its web site, specifically the www.creditunion.coop page is being phished. Phishing attacks typically begin with e-mail messages purporting to come from established companies. Web page links within the e-mail messages direct recipients to web sites disguised as official company web pages where the recipient is asked to enter personal information such as their social security number, account number, password or credit card information.
